Fall 2014 Charity Raffle: Read and Feed

If you’re new to The Handmade Market, you may not know that we partner with a different local charity for each and every event. Our goal is to introduce (or reintroduce) our awesome guests to equally wonderful organizations doing good in our community. At the event, visitors can make a suggested donation to the charity at the entrance, and in return receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a gift basket filled-to-the-brim with handcrafted goods and vouchers for services donated by our generous Charity Sponsors.

This November we’re partnering with Read and Feed, a literacy organization focused on illustrating the importance of reading from an early age. Read and Feed’s mission: feed the minds of low-income elementary aged students while nourishing their bodies. We’ll share more of Read and Feed’s story with you soon — stay tuned.

Save a Life, Support the Arts

Triangle Pets AliveAt every Handmade Market, The Handmaidens partner with a local charity to organize a raffle benefiting their cause. Shoppers who make a donation to the charity are entered in a drawing to win goods and services donated by local and national businesses as well as some of the artists and craftspeople participating in the event.

Our partner on May 3rd is Triangle Pets Alive; their mission is to save pets from area shelters who are on kill lists.

About Triangle Pets Alive

Triangle Pets Alive is an 100% volunteer driven rescue organization that depends on community involvement to carry out its mission. This rescue organization is dedicated to taking healthy, treatable, trainable pets from shelters. Rescued companions are first fostered in loving homes to acclimate them to the kind of environment they deserve. The fostering process is fundamental to Triangle Pets Alive’s saving the lives of the many neglected and abused pets that enter traditional shelter settings. The goal is to successfully find forever homes for each one.

Their work doesn’t stop at rescuing companion animals but also extends to educating us, the general public, about successfully and lovingly caring for our pets to keep them out of shelters in the first place.

Oh what fun!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Yesterday marked the 16th edition of The Handmade Market. We speak for the more than 50 fabulous participating artists and makers when we say that we’re grateful that you chose to shop local with us!

Did you get in on the Early Bird shopping this time? Early enough to score one of the stylish new tote bags?

totebag CollageThanks to Jenn Hales of Jenn Hales Illustration and Design for capturing what a Handmaiden actually looks like — or at least what a Handmaiden looks like this year! This super-crafter hero you’ve seen on all the posters and promos is a great representation of all super-crafters — and there was a room full of them yesterday!

A VERY special thank you goes to our bag sponsors! With generous donations from Pullen Arts Center, DECO Raleigh, Epona & Oak, and City Market we were able to pass out those pretty yellow tote bags to the first 500 shoppers. We also want to thank Carolina Fiber Fest for their continued support of The Handmade Market as a sponsor.

But our biggest shout out goes to YOU, the contributor to our chosen charity Hospice of Wake County. YOU, who gave a little cash so that Hospice can continue to give to others. Together with YOU, we raised $657 for these great local caregivers!

If you have a story to share about your day at The Handmade Market, we would really love to hear from you. If you took photos at the event, we would love for you to add them to The Handmade Market group on Flickr.
