Artist Spotlight: It’s By Design

Lois Peterson is the creative force behind It’s By Design, as well as a lovely and talented member of The Handmaidens. She’s been making jewelry since 2001, but she’s also got her hands into lots of other artistic endeavors from mosaic tiling, quilting, and creating the most wonderful and thoughtful gifts for her three children. Ask Lois about the Harry Potter books she made!

What are the products that you’re bringing to The Handmade Market, and what inspired your newest creations?
I will have my shimmers, of course, which are earrings of etched brass and nickel discs accented with crystals. My newest creation are some necklaces inspired with Elaine Ray flowers. I used to think the Elaine Ray ceramic beads would only work for an ‘earthy’ look. Something about these flowers just started my creative juices flowing.

What is your most treasured art, craft, or design tool and why?
I wouldn’t call my round nosed pliers ‘treasured’, but I’m not sure what I’d do without them. I do lots of wire wrapping!

What is your favorite creative soundtrack?
I like to listen to Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors, Mat Kearney, and Mumford & Sons. But truthfully, I usually have a TV show on while I put things together.

What advice would you give a starting artist / crafter / designer?
Don’t price your items too low just because you think you’re not good enough. Not everyone is crafty, so be confident that what you do IS special to someone and they really don’t mind buying it. Crafty people tend to hang around other crafty people, and we all seem to think we are not as good as the next person.

Which artist(s) are you most excited to see at The Handmade Market?
I’m excited to check out CameraSHY Photography, Linen Laid & Felt, and Two Sisters Designs. I received something from Two Sisters Designs as a Christmas gift and love it, so I can’t wait to see the rest of their stuff.

Spring is such a glorious season in Raleigh. Where is your favorite place to play outside?
I like my own back porch and back yard!

What’s your favorite spring break destination?
It would be anywhere that at least one of my three kids would be. I LOVE to go to their homes, their towns. I love anywhere my husband and I can go and be with our grown up kids!

Bieber or Timberlake?
Timberlake for sure. Sometimes I just have to google JT and SNL for lots of laughs!

Stop by The Handmaidens’ area of The Handmade Market this Saturday, April 23 and see Lois’ beautifully crafted jewelry.

Artist Spotlight: Ever So Lovely

Brandi Moody of Ever So Lovely creates original works of art, pen and ink illustrations, tiny paintings that are 2″x2″ with wooden easels (intended to dress up your cubicle space at work!!!), one of a kind hand-painted silk scarves, framed limited edition prints, and paper goods such as cards and posters. This is her first Handmade Market and we’re happy to have her with us.

What are the products that you’re bringing to The Handmade Market, and what inspired your newest creations?
I have a new series of botanical pen and ink illustrations, colorful hand-painted silk scarves in skull and garden designs, along with some limited edition prints and cards. These were inspired by the flower garden I have in my back yard. I just really love the way leaves and flowers take over that little area out there and make a beautiful collage of colors pulling in all the birds and butterflies from my neighborhood. I’ll also have a series of tiny paintings up for sale – perfect if you are looking to decorate your office but don’t have a ton of space.

What is your most treasured art, craft, or design tool and why?
I have so many that it’s hard to choose just one but I would have to say my most treasured would be my mom’s sewing machine because she created so many different pieces on that and it has a lot of history. Other than that, I would have to say my Macbook (I’m a Graphic Designer by trade), my pens and my camera – I’m always taking pictures of different things that inspire me.

What is your favorite creative soundtrack?
I have a playlist in iTunes that consists of Adele, The Killers, Meiko, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Moby, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and my current favorite Agnes Obel.

What advice would you give a starting artist / crafter / designer?
Be true to yourself and create something you love. If you have a passion and keep pursuing it and working at it each day then you will get your name out there. That and being consistent with your brand both online and in person.

Which artist(s) are you most excited to see at The Handmade Market?
That’s a tough one! I’m super excited to see Tasha McKelvey’s work. I’m a huge bird lover and her collection is super cute!

What’s your favorite spring break destination?
I’m more of a Fall Break kinda girl and my destination of choice would be the Outer Banks of NC – hands down!

Bieber or Timberlake?
neither…give me Lady Gaga any day

Come see Brandi THIS Saturday and check out what she has to offer. I bet she won’t mind if you do your best Lady Gaga impression for her either!
