artist spotlight: judah ross

Oami Powers, the lovely genius behind local clothing label, Judah Ross, is returning to May’s Handmade Market with her dreamy natural and sustainable fabrics.

What new and exciting pieces are you bringing to The Handmade Market this spring? My Spring 2012 collection! I have a feeling the Inca dresses are going to be a favorite, they are easy to dress up or down, comfortable, flattering and available in indigo or a stunning moss green (I have yet to see someone who is not flattered by this color, seriously, it’s awesome).

What’s your favorite thing to make right now? Is it a top seller?
The Sumner tee, I love that it’s a basic, but also a little sexy, without showing too much skin. I’m also itching to get started on some tanks in pretty cotton prints.

How did you get started with your craft?
I learned to sew from my mom when I was six, on an old green Husqvarna. I continued to sew throughout high school, buying vintage dresses and cutting them up to make something new. It still makes my skin crawl some of the beautiful pieces I ruined, like a print velvet dress from the1930’s! In my late 20’s I met my friend Ursula and we started designing clothes together. She taught me how to make and grade patterns and how to do production sewing.

What are the best and worst aspects of having your own small business? The worst is the long hours and the pay, the best is everything else! I love my job!!

Which artist are you most excited to see at The Handmade Market? Two Pounds Mustard!! They sold out at the Boylan Art Walk before I could try some, so I’m going to get in line early this time.

Gale or Peeta?
I had to look that one up, that’s how uncool I am.
What’s your favorite Ryan Gosling tumblr site?
Handmade Ryan Gosling, OF COURSE.

What are your twitter and facebook names/links?

The Handmade Market is on Saturday, May 12! Be sure to stop by Oami’s booth and drool (not literally, please) over her yummy fabrics and sexy designs.
