The Handmade Market Spotlight: Tierra Sol

Seana from Tierra Sol

Describe your style, influences, inspiration, and what you plan to bring:
We create happy and minimal hand-formed ceramics, studio grown cacti, hand mixed soils, and terrariums – For Plant Killers Who are Plant Lovers.
We used to be plant killers and Tierra Sol Studio was born out of a need for a new generation of confident plant caretakers. As popularity of plants grows many people find they didn’t learn about plant care from the generations before them. The new problem for our plant lovers is that the mass produced succulents and cacti are being offered to buyers in cheap soil that doesn’t exist in nature and kills plants from the roots up.
Our goal is to provide forever plants. We grow the hardiest plants possible in a greenhouse that we built to adapt plants to indoor light, we make our planters absorbent to avoid overwatering, and hand mix fluffy sandy cactus and succulent soil.

In your experience, what has been your best venue for selling your work:
Markets are our favorite way to sell our work because we love being able to meet people in person and help them build their plant care confidence. We love seeing their reaction to our
work, their happiness when they know they can keep their plants alive, and when they return to tell us they did it.

Which artist at The Handmade Market are you excited to see/meet?:
We are excited to see all of our talented maker friends and to meet Peppertrain jewelry!

What is your favorite way to put yourself in the mood for creativity?:
We like to rotate through different activities for inspiration including nature walks, time in the greenhouse, loud Latin music, or sometimes reality tv, if we are really tired. We prefer to create together and will experiment on clay and on paper.

What is the weirdest job you have ever had?:
Since 2004 I have worked on my research about drug trafficking, their dance parties in Brazil, and their often positive contributions to poor communities is pretty unusual. I also worked as a receptionist at a hair salon in high school where my boss would not come in and would ask me to cut his client’s hair.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out and/or what is the best advice you have received for your art & business?:
We believe that the most successful brands are digging deep to find what makes them different from everyone else. When someone sees their work, they can name the brand because it doesn’t look like anything else being made.

What is the best comment or compliment you have ever received for your work?
We recently received second place in USA TODAY’s 10Best Makers in the US: Home and Garden, but our favorite compliments are the reactions we get to our work at markets.
