Because Mall is a Four Letter Word

Spring 2013 Charity: The Scrap Exchange

At every Handmade Market, The Handmaidens partner with a local charity to organize a raffle benefiting their cause. Shoppers who make a donation to the charity are entered in a drawing to win goods and services donated by local and national businesses as well as some of the artists and craftspeople participating in the event.

The Handmade Market on May 4 will host The Scrap Exchange as its charity. This organization’s mission is to promote creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse.

About The Scrap Exchange
The Scrap Exchange is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse. They have been going strong since 1991.

They collect materials from hundreds of individuals, businesses, industries, and municipal sources and distribute those materials through their retail store in Durham, North Carolina as well as through workshops, parties, and outreach events across the Southeast.

The Scrap Exchange creates a win-win-win situation for everyone involved — their donors are eligible for a tax deduction for the value of the items they donate; community members have access to hard-to-find, affordable materials; and usable materials are kept from entering the waste stream.

How can you help?
There is never an admission fee to The Handmade Market; however, cash donations are accepted in exchange for tickets for the semi-annual charity raffle. The Handmade Market offers guests the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win glorious gift baskets, each full of wonderful items and valued at $100 or more. Your donation of $3 purchases one ticket, and $5 gives you two chances to win a basket.
