The Handmade Market Spotlight: bird + beau

Kristin Austin from bird + beau

Describe your style, influences, inspiration, and what you plan to bring:
Often finding inspiration in the stars + the sea, my work tends to be minimal + delicate with both organic + architectural lines and a subtle use of color.

Lately, my hoop earrings + bangles have been fan favorites. I’ll have plenty of these and a new mix of modern boho accessories with me at The Handmade Market — can’t wait!

In your experience, what has been your best venue for selling your work:
I love to sell in person at shows; the excitement, the immediate feedback, + actually meeting the folks buying my items is especially great! I also use Instagram most for promoting my brand + sell online at

Which artist at The Handmade Market are you excited to see/meet?:
I know quite a few of the other artists — so I’m pretty excited to see them all + shop new ones, but I will say I tend to get myself in trouble at Ashley’s Twiggyroad Designs table! All of her painted wood jewelry is gorgeous! It never fails I get complimented a handful of times when wearing her pieces. AND I am super thrilled to have Elle Woods + October Forever as my neighbors this market!

What is your favorite way to put yourself in the mood for creativity?:
My brain is always on, dreaming up my next piece, display, or idea. When I’m in my studio, I work best alone and generally with a good podcast on. I’m such a nerd about learning the ins + outs of small business marketing, etc., so I have a few podcasts I enjoy when I’m not singing along to The Head + The Heart or The Rosebuds.

What is the weirdest job you have ever had?:
I blew glass for awhile. While the job itself wasn’t so weird — it was actually really awesome — my bosses were lunatics. I would come home with so many stories!

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out and/or what is the best advice you have received for your art & business?:
Oh, branding is key. It’s kind of like that quote “Dress for the job you want…” except in this case you style your brand for the client you want. The most beautiful products will seem lackluster if a site or display isn’t in line with the brand aesthetic.

Also, say yes + figure it out later! Haha. I have to do this sometimes because I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist and I want to wait til something is perfect before just jumping in — but things don’t have to be entirely perfect! So don’t miss out on launching that site, applying for that show, or taking the next opportunity, just do it!

What is the best comment or compliment you have ever received for your work?
I think the best compliments come in the form of repeat customers! I am always flattered by the sweet things folks say at shows + whatnot, but when a client orders again, that’s the best feeling.
