The Handmade Market Spotlight: Shannon Newlin

Shannon Newlin

Describe your style, influences, inspiration, and what you plan to bring:
My style is a modern interpretation of florals and nature. I am always inspired by the vibrant colors that can be found along gardens and nature walks. My work has organically evolved to include patterns in many of my designs. Some of my bestsellers include whimsical watercolor nature scenes as well as portraits of women with a sense of individual style.

In your experience, what has been your best venue for selling your work:
I enjoy selling my work in person at several art and craft shows throughout the year. My favorite part is getting to know some of my customers and to hear first hand which pieces of art they feel drawn to. I also work with a few wonderful licensing partners.

Which artist at The Handmade Market are you excited to see/meet?:
I am eager to see Pamut Apparel. Her work looks lovely and modern. I love fashion and I am a huge Project Runway fan. I am always eager to see new innovative clothing and design.

What is your favorite way to put yourself in the mood for creativity?:
At the moment I have been listening to the blues everyday. Music is a big part of my creative process. It always calms me and inspires me at the same time. I work in a home studio so I am alone for the most part, but I find it is also important to take either an online or local art class for creative fellowship.

How did you come up with your business name?
I use my own name for my business since I am a painter and this is how I sign my work.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out and/or what is the best advice you have received for your art & business?:My advise for a new artist just starting out is to not be afraid to put your work out there. Get feedback from both customers and potential employers. I don’t really believe there is a “right” way or “wrong” way with art…it all takes practice and time. The journey is the best part. Just keep creating!

What is the best comment or compliment you have ever received for your work?
I have had many priceless, meaningful conversations from customers. I just love how art can create dialogue and a shared community.
