Haley Ahn from OLIVE + LOU
Describe your style, influences, inspiration, and what you plan to bring:
People often ask me how I got started doing what I do. Believe it or not, my backgrounds not in fashion or textiles. I am however, an entrepreneur by heart and my mini-muse Olive sparked an interest in making clothing for little girls. The garment business runs 2 generations deep in my family so I do have a love and appreciation for the trade. As many moms can relate, I was tired of searching thru a sea of virtual racks, only to find garments that didn’t suit my taste on many levels. That’s when Olive + Lou was born. Quality, comfortable and effortlessly stylish clothing for little girls is our jam! Did you know that each and every dress, romper, leggings, everything…is hand cut and sewn with love from one our 3 team members? We love making clothing that the kiddos are excited about wearing and mom’s can feel good about buying.
In your experience, what has been your best venue for selling your work:
Being an active and engaged member of the social media community including Facebook and Instagram has been tremendously helpful in our marketing efforts. Local markets are a great way to meet and network with our local community and customers.
What is your favorite way to put yourself in the mood for creativity?:
I wish I could say I was a morning person but my creative juices tend to flow most freely during the wee hours of the night when everything is still.
How did you come up with your business name?:
I always knew the name of my business would include the word Olive as that’s my beautiful daughter’s name and my inspiration for my work. Now Lou is our beloved cat that passed away. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?
What advice would you give to an artist just starting out and/or what is the best advice you have received for your art & business?:
I’ve only been doing this for about a year and a half so I’m still very much a newbie and learning everyday. If I had to give one advice to anyone starting out, it would be this. Do plenty of research and know your market/competition/pricing before getting started.
What is the best comment or compliment you have ever received for your work?
We buy several dresses at a time because she wants to wear it every single day!
