Because Mall is a Four Letter Word

The Handmade Market Spotlight: The Plum Umbrella Studio

Emily Schmidt from The Plum Umbrella Studio

Describe your style, influences, inspiration, and what you plan to bring:

I am bringing bullet journals, lined journals, sketchbooks and photo books, all in vibrant colors and patterns (my fave!). I make my own bookcloth out of regular fabric and I love getting to curate a collection of beautiful prints to put on my covers. Traditional bookcloth is generally pretty boring, so I am so happy to be able to change things up and get these lovely prints onto books. Whether you love to write, sketch, doodle or collect photographs, I’ll have something beautiful for you!

How did you learn your craft?:

I learned (and am still learning!) bookbinding at my day job repairing books at the Libraries at NC State (p.s. yes, it’s the best job ever). I made journals for friends and family over the years and after repeatedly hearing “You should really sell these” I finally jumped in. Now I get to use a different part of my brain and creativity to make books from scratch and make them as lovely as they deserve to be!

What is your favorite way to put yourself in the mood for creativity?:

When I’m working through a problem or making decisions, I have to be alone and quiet. But when I start cranking through some books, Netflix is my friend! I’m always looking for new shows to keep me company, so stop by and tell me your favorite!

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out and/or what is the best advice you have received for your art & business?:

There is room for everyone. I heard this when I was just starting out and it gave me the freedom to explore my own style. Someone else may be doing the same craft as you, but you get to do it your way. Give yourself space to find your style. Focus on what you’re doing and dive deep into your own creativity. We need your voice, we want your style. It’s a big world out there, and there is room for everyone.
