How do you define and measure success for yourself and your business? Of course, my hope is that my business will be successful financially, but even without any monetary gain I would still be creating because it makes me happy. I feel successful when I can sit back and look at something that I have made with my own hands. There is a sense of pride in this that gives meaning and fulfillment to my days.
When work gets really intense, do you lean in or step back? Tell us how and why that approach works for you and your biz. When a lot is happening with my business I tend to lean in. I feel I am far more productive when I am under pressure. I have three young daughters, so my time to create is in the evenings after they are asleep. When I am super focused on creating numerous pieces for a deadline or preparing my display for a craft show, I stay up far too late, but get a lot done.
How do you connect with other creative types? Does this happen online, in person, or some of both? I think creative people attract other creative people. I feel an instant connection with other makers no matter what their medium. I love attending and selling at craft fairs because there are so many inspiring and interesting local creators who I can connect with. We can share tips about having a handmade business. I have also really enjoyed being part of Etsy. I think Etsy has done an amazing job setting up a community where sellers can connect and help each other be successful.
Is there a new item that you’d like to share? This bar necklace is a fairly new addition to my collection. My entire collection really has the same concept — modern, simple, yet luxurious. This piece has just a touch of gold and is strung directly on a 14k gold-filled chain that is so delicate that the rectangular pendant seems to just float on your neck.
What’s your favorite tv show to binge-watch? Our house is mainly tuned in to My little Pony or Pinky Dinky Doo, but when the kids are in bed and my huband is watching a game at a friend’s place, then I get the remote all to myself. On those rare nights I like to desert my studio and enjoy a marathon of Downton Abbey.
Which actor would play you in the movie version of your life? I guess if I had to choose an actress to play me it would be Katie Holmes. She seems sweet, whether she is or not, I know not. Also, I love her short hair cuts. I’ve taken her photo to the salon before to try to imitate her hair at the Bambi Awards. Google it — it’s really cute!
Come to The Handmade Market this Saturday, May 3. Be sure to stop by ASH to see first-hand how incredibly beautiful her designs are. You’ll surely need at least one for you and more for the mothers in your life.
